Something like 10 years ago, my mom found Neurotica in B&N. She loved it. My dad loved it. I loved it. Our friends love it. Our copy has been passed around so much, it’s a wonder it’s still in one piece. So I had high hopes for another Margolis book.
Sadly, it’s not as good as Neurotica. It’s just not. It felt contrived, and had way too much in common with Neurotica. It felt like it was trying to replicate the success of that book, and was relying on it too much.
There’s also a problem with trying to be funny. Our heroine, Rachel, is a standup comic. Cue Doomed sound effect. Rachel’s jokes are ok, but they really need to be performed to be appreciated. As such, it’s sort of hard to believe.
And then there’s our hero, Matt. He’s clearly a yummy washing machine repairman, but I’m just not FEELING IT. This isn’t like Neurotica, it’s meant to be a classic romance. And that means it’s supposed to hit you in the ovaries and run. Which I’m just not getting here. I can only remember one sex scene, which was pretty good (yes, it involved the washing machine) but not much else.
Sigh. I’m going to try one more for Miss Margolis, and then average the scores.
